SILICONE VERSUS TRADITIONAL
>> Tuesday, March 2, 2010
I received some silicone bakeware for a gift once and tried it, wasn't impressed. I have used silicone (silpat to be exact) in the restaurants that I was very happy with, so I think it boils down to quality. Silicone is very durable and can last a long time (I dare not say forever, but it is possible) are dishwasher safe and can with stand high temperatures. The lower quality silicone still needs spraying or something to prevent sticking, has a lower heat tolerance, is very floppy and difficult to work with and can tear easily. So unless you are willing to invest in a high quality set I say DON'T DO IT (just shop around if you have made up you mind to get a set) But you can get the same results from traditional bakeware.
I do however have to GIVE A HUGE SHOUT OUT FOR THE SILICONE UTENSILS... I absolutely love them and they beat the pants off of the traditional cooking utensils anyday of the week and here is why:
1. They withstand high temps (they don't melt), I use them on the grill with no problem.
2: They won't scratch nonstick pans/surfaces
3: bye bye to traditional rubber spatulas
4: Last a long time (and I do dare say forever)
5: Dishwasher safe
6: You can replace most of your current utensils, just about any kitchen tool imaginable (spatulas, tongs, spoons, whisks, rolling pins ect.ect.) and they come coated with silicone so you have lot's of options.
Bottom line shop around and get the best quality you can afford. It is worth it.
Enjoy!
