5 ways to a safer kitchen
>> Sunday, March 7, 2010
I have been thinking alot about safety in the kitchen lately, since my 6 year old has been so eager to help.
I want to encourage that, but there are some safety rules that must be followed.
Never let your younger children feel then can cook alone ( even if they seem like they are capable, there are far too many things that can go wrong and accidents do happen). This means being clear on what they can and can't touch without supervision.
1: Never use the stove, oven or knives without parental supervision (it is up to you of course to decide when they can start parcticing the use of a knife, my daughter is clear that she can use a knife under strict supervision and only to cut items like bread, fruit or soft items that don't require a lot of pressure. A 6 year old certainly shouldn't be practicing cuting carrots or potatoes these items are harder to cut and a slip of the knife could be disasterous.
2: The kitchen is not a playground! When there is cooking going on in the kitchen, there is absolutely no playing!!!!! Can you imaging pulling that boiling hot pot of pasta off the stove and have you little one run into you causing the entire boiling pot to be dumped on her head????? I cannot stress enough that a kitchen is not a playground!
3: Respect the equipment and what it can do. Yes, the cheese grater is fascinating but it can take off a finger or anything else that may be placed in it. The microwave is neat too, but no you cannot put metal or toys in it.
4: If you spill something clean it up right away. A wet floor can cause a fall that could be life threatening.
5: Keep it clean. Teach you kids about food safety and how contamination can cause illness.
I will be sharing more tips on food safety so stay tuned, subscribe and you won't miss out!
Enjoy!
